from the Christmas Past series, pencil on paper, 14″ x 11″     $154

1981. Today’s art was the 9th of 12 Christmas arts created for friend Harold Stover’s concert series in New York City. In the decade from 1973 -1982, I created 37 (nice coincidence, eh?) discrete artworks for his series, which included numerous seasonal concerts at 2nd Presbyterian, 96th & Central Park West, as well as organ concerts that Harold performed at a variety of venues, including: St. Patrick’s Cathedral on 5th Avenue; St. Thomas Episcopal Church just a few blocks further north on 5th Avenue; Trinity Church at Broadway and Wall St.; the Washington Cathedral in D.C.; St Martin-in-the-Fields, London. Mr. Stover has a talent for getting around. He and his wife Elizabeth Gruppe, daughter of sculptor Karl Gruppe (1893-1982), now live about 10 miles up the Saco River in Maine from where I grew up.

74JuneJulyOCWPReflecting for the first time in many years on the various venues where Harold played, for which I designed advertising flyers, I’m reminded that I didn’t have the opportunity to design an attention-getting flyer for his concert at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA near Chadds Ford, which I attended in the mid ’90s after moving to Philadelphia. I wonder what the powers-that-be at Longwood would have thought of some of the rather non-traditional pieces I created in earlier years for Harold’s organ series (like the one above from 1974), and whether they would have welcomed the opportunity to see a bit of AldenArt gracing their advertising for his concert there? I think I know the answer…
