There is a Vitality…

“There is a vitality, a life-force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action. And because there is only one of you in all of time this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium, and be lost. The world will not have it…”

ThereIsAVitalityWPSo said the great modern dancer Martha Graham (1894-1991). I came across her quote in an ad in Playbill magazine, picked up at a performance of the American Ballet Theater in NYC, ca. 1977. The ad was memorable – a full-page highly-polarized close-up photo of Martha-in-black looking up into the light, with the text type reversing out to white against the black background at the bottom of the page. I was immediately taken with the poetic truth of the statement, making it part of my internal vocabulary of inspiration. An affirmation for withstanding the storms of self-doubt.
