Road Trip #2 — The Real and the Imagined

Real&IllusionWPFerryville Wisconsin, June 17, 2014: An astonishingly beautiful sky greeted us travelers the morning after we arrived at Marge and Dewey’s retreat on Eagle Ridge, high on the ledges overlooking the mighty Mississippi. A storm had blown through the night before leaving in its wake clear skies; one of those pristine summer days of azure with spectacular white puffs of cloud dotting the horizon. Perfect inspiration for trying my hand at a color sketch in acrylics capturing some of the summer magic before my eyes. Above, two views: a photograph recording an accurate view looking across the wide river to Iowa farms in the distance, as seen from inside the octagonally-shaped screened-in gazebo adjacent to the house; and an afternoon’s interpretation thereof. The gazebo was the perfect place for working; I was still luxuriating in open air, but there was a roof over my head, and the insect population looking for a free meal was considerably diminished by the presence of screens surrounding and protecting me from their depredations. How sweet was that! The sketch on 4-ply watercolor board 24″ x 20″ measures 20″ x 16″.
