“The deeper the blue becomes, the more strongly it calls man towards the infinite, awakening in him a desire for the pure and, finally, for the supernatural… The brighter it becomes, the more it loses its sound, until it turns into silent stillness and becomes white.” _ Wassily Kandinsky (18 Dec 1866 – 13 Dec 1944)
There really is something special about blue light, as Randy Dalton, Dumpster Diver Extraordinaire, would gladly have told you. In honor of Randy, Philadelphia’s own arts activist Mr. Blue, who died suddenly last winter, I’m hosting my first annual Open-House Holiday-Sale of Evening Lamps by Alden at 717 Federal Street in South Philadelphia this December (details below). My lamps were inspired in great part by Randy’s blue-lit creations, first seen at the CEC in West Philly many years ago while studying Tai Chi there. My presentation of them will be different from the plan I originally formulated a week ago for this upcoming holiday event. Normally these low-light Evening Lamps, which are lit with remote-controlled color-changing LED light-bulbs, transition smoothly through all the colors of the rainbow, making my house glow with light, both warm and cool. However for this event I’m turning all my lamps on BLUE, just for Randy, who would have turned 68 on November 3rd. “It will be a Blue Christmas without you” Mr. Blue. Nevertheless, I feel Randy would have wanted us to celebrate Blueness this holiday season anyway. As he so often intoned, “Don’t BE blue, DO blue”. So come check out the Blue Light in my tributary Blue Grotto at 717 Federal Street this holiday season:
Saturday December 10: 5-8 pm
Sunday December 18: 2-5 pm
other times by appointment: 215 334 3021
Special demonstrations of the LED light-bulb’s full-color capabilities will be available on request. Below, photos of eighteen lamps seen in their Off – R – G – B – On (white) modes. These lamps have been featured in a daily email that I send to a list of friends and admirers of my art. These are only the first 18 lamps I’ve featured in my emails; there will be a new one every day leading up to my open houses, and throughout the holidays, as I’m a prolific creator of these lamps for the evening that friends have christened New Age Bordello Lamps. Interested in seeing the rest? just say “hola, sign me up.”
