Lift Off

LiftOffWP#7 in the New Drawings from Old (1974-2014) series, aka Offertory #2, another variation on a theme, revised 1.24.14, using a #2 pencil on paper, 14″ x 11″

No, it’s not the same drawing as three days ago. Same feelings of aspiration motivated them both however; although this sketch was started in the early 80s, not 1974, as the others were. The Dance. I could write volumes about the dance and it’s impact on my life. Come to think of it, my life IS a Dance. Totus mundus agit histrionem (all the world plays the actor) – a Latin phrase  that implied what Shakespeare so eloquently stated – “all the world’s a stage”.  Not only are we actors, some of us are dancers as well. I am reminded through the Grand Encyclopedia, Wikipedia, that that famous line was from As You Like It, the bard’s 20th of his 37 plays. In 1959, the spring of my freshman year at Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine, the English class led by Mr. Hargreaves studied this particular Shakespearean play, which required the last major writing project of the year. I created an elaborate binder-bound term-paper, including drawings by my own early hand. I’ve come a long way baby! Now to find those drawings…

I’m not sure if THE DANCE is a book, so do not know hoe it influenced your life.
