Spring of 1964. Sophomore 3-D class. Teacher: sculptor Joe Goto. Assignment: Mother & Child. Medium: clay. I was fascinated to work with such a malleable material, one of the most ancient and basic of all mediums. No wonder children take to working in clay with such abandon. I can still remember the wiry professor ambling down the aisle between the long tables where we were working, stopping momentarily to watch my progress, then quietly commenting “very like Henry Moore” with a curious nod and walking on. I mumbled an insecure thank you, not sure if the comment was a compliment or a slur in the enigmatic Professor Goto’s book; but since I eventually got a B- in course I figured it couldn’t have been all that bad.
Spring of 2014. The rain stopped last night after two days, allowing a bright sunny day to reign instead.
