The weekend ahead promises to be busy and interesting: Friday night, Kate Mellina and Dave Christopher host an event for which, in addition to my presence, I have been commissioned to supply a bowl of my legendary Butter Crunch. More on that later…

Salon Night at The Plastic Club, 247 Camac St., Philadelphia

Salon organizer Anders Hansen comments: “Artist and club member Alden Cole will read passages from The Horse’s Mouth, Joyce Cary’s great book about a fictional artist, Gulley Jimson: genius, con man, philosopher, Blake scholar, and rogue. Cary was an artist as well as a writer, and he created a wild and wily comedic character who takes on an absurd society while revealing an inner world of vision and artistic integrity that we all might aspire to.

“Following discussion, we will screen the wonderful film version starring Alec Guinness. This is many people’s favorite movie about an artist (even though fictional), and features an inimitable performance by Guinness, who also distilled the screenplay from Cary’s book. By turns droll, serious, and screamingly funny, it is peopled with the cream of English character actors and boasts a great music score as well.”

Friend Renette Hackett recommended Alec Guinness’s movie The Horse’s Mouth to me years ago as one of the funniest movies she had ever seen; i finally watched it on video back in the 90s when i had a working TV and was watching a lot of movies at home. Terrific movie; and having heard comments numerous times over the years from various friends about how much i reminded them of Sir Alex, I got to see why. Eventually i read Joyce Cary’s excellent novel that the movie was drawn from; Saturday night i will read one of my favorite chapters from the middle of the book in which Gulley Jimson waxes wildly comedic in a dialogue with his friend Nosy about the joys and sorrows of creation.

Passage2Indiaw-OKWPSunday December 7 from 2 – 5 pm, the Plastic Club hosts its opening reception for Portraits, an exhibit running through 12/25. My contribution is a painting finished the last week of November which I’d started in August 2013 and put aside, until inspired to finish it for this particular exhibit.

2907WPSunday afternoon December 7 from noon – 4 pm, the DaVinci Art Alliance, 704 Catharine Street, Philadelphia, hosted Artful Giving, the Alliance’s annual fundraiser and members art sale, in which I entered the three Night Lights shown, and all three sold. I’m so pleased…
